Feng Lianghong (b. 1962, Shanghai, China) graduated from the Shanghai Art and Design Academy in 1983. During his time there, he began experimenting with abstract painting, making him one of the earliest practitioners of abstract art in China. In 1985, he co-organized Modern Painting: Six Men Group Exhibition at Fudan University alongside artists such as Yu Youhan, Ding Yi, and Qin Yifeng. This was one of the first abstract art exhibitions in China following the reform and opening-up era. In 1989, he graduated from the Central Institute of Arts and Crafts (now Academy of Arts & Design, Tsinghua University) and participated in the seminal 1989 China/Avant-Garde Exhibition at the National Art Museum of China. That same year, he began teaching at East China Normal University in Shanghai. In the early 1990s, Feng moved to New York and established a studio in Brooklyn. He returned to China in 2006 and now lives and works in Beijing.
Influenced by Zen Buddhism, Feng places importance on the relationship between external space and inner perception. Through a process of painting that embraces spontaneity and chance, he explores and captures specific effects of color and brushwork. He emphasizes the unity of the artwork’s inner spirit and visual language. Over more than forty years of continuous artistic practice, he has developed a range of distinct series.
